For release: July 24, 2009
TULSA, OK -- Oklahoma's only certified Function Point Specialist
will be presenter at an afternoon session of the 4th Annual
International Software Measurement & Analysis Conference.
The conference, scheduled for Sept. 13-16 in Chicago, will
attract the world's top software metrics professionals.
Wayne Wild, Manager of Metrics for StoneHenge Partners in Tulsa,
OK, is scheduled to speak on "10 Steps to Starting a Successful FPA
Program." In April, Wild passed the test to become FPA certified by
the International Function Point Users Group. He is the only
certified Function Point Specialist in Oklahoma and one of only 112
in the U.S.
Function Point Analysis is a method to break down a software
system's requirements into smaller logical components so they can
be better understood, analyzed and tracked. It is an accepted (ISO)
standard to measure software size. Its primary advantages:
- Scope: Projects sized by Function Points are accurate with a
precision of +/- 5%. That means when the estimated effort (time,
people and budget) of a project is scoped up-front using Function
Point Analysis, the actual effort will usually be completed on
target.
- Change control: When new requirements are added to a project,
the impact of those requirements can be accurately assessed and the
effort adjusted.
- Tracking: The progress of functional components can be tracked
and reported to stakeholders on a weekly basis with fine
granularity.
But because of its technically precise nature, injecting
Function Point Analysis into an IT shop's culture can be daunting,
Wild says. It requires much more in-depth business requirements up
front, and works best when an independent scope manager is assigned
to track metrics on every project. Wild recounts several examples
among the 20 projects he has counted at StoneHenge Partners to
illustrate the best practices for instilling FPA into an
organization.
